Protect Your Mouth This Spring Sports Season
A mouthguard is a valuable piece of equipment that is worn over the teeth to protect them from injuries in the event of an impact. Anyone participating in contact sports or any activity that could potentially damage teeth should wear a mouthguard.
A sports mouthguard forms a protective layer over the upper teeth and is a great way to protect against soft tissue injuries, jaw fractures, tooth fracture, or displacement.
Types of Mouthguards
The type of mouthguard you choose to wear will determine the level of protection you will receive. There are 3 types of mouthguards:
- Custom-made mouthguards – These are obtained through your dentist’s office, and while they are more costly, they are individually created for the user to provide the best possible protection.
- Boil and bite mouthguards – These are available in sporting goods stores and will require hot water to adjust the plastic comfortably around the teeth.
- Stock mouthguards – Usually, the least expensive and offers the least amount of protection since they come ready to wear and will, in most cases, not conform to the shape of your mouth.
Taking Care of a Mouthguard
Proper care of your mouthguard will keep it in perfect shape, so it continues to keep you protected. Mouthguards should be kept clean to avoid harboring bacteria. It’s recommended to wash them after every use with a toothbrush and mild toothpaste. Also, check for any signs of wear and damage so that you can have them replaced. To keep your mouthguards in excellent condition, carry them during your regular dental check-ups.
